The lusty month of May

The spring term begins today. Here's the word from the registrar's office: "On-campus registration will take place May 1 to May 4 in Ira G. Needles Hall. If you have made changes to your course selection, new schedules can be picked up in the Registrar's Office on the second floor. Fees can be paid at the Cashier's Office opposite the Registrar's Office on the second floor of Needles Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. NB: Late fees begin May 5."

Which day should you show up and pay? Engineering, today; mathematics, Tuesday; arts, Wednesday; applied health sciences, environmental studies and science, Thursday.

Graduate students are going through much the same routine. Returning grad students pay their fees at the cashier's wickets; new grad students should stop first at the university graduate office on the third floor of Needles Hall.

Everybody's back in business

Food services outlets have returned to their normal hours -- except for the Village 2 cafeteria, which will be open this summer only when it's required because of a conference in the Village.

Anybody who was off campus in the winter term is returning to find the expanded Campus Centre in full operation -- it was just a construction site when you left in December, wasn't it? Among the features of the CC now is a food outlet on the main level of the new "mall" wing. It's still nameless, but will be called "Brubaker's" whenever the sign arrives and gets installed. Meanwhile, the old Wild Duck Cafe on the ring road side of the CC is out of business; the Bombshelter pub will be taking over the space.

Health services is announcing its clinic hours for the spring term: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

And in the libraries

As briefly as I can summarize them, because they're pretty complicated, here are the library hours, effective today until August 12.

The Dana Porter Library will be open 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday. Circulation and other user services are available 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 1:15 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Information service is available 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday only.

(The copy centre in Dana Porter will have reduced hours this week, the graphic services department says. It'll be open 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Next week: back to normal, staying open until 8 p.m.)

The Davis Centre Library will be open 8 a.m. to midnight Monday to Thursday; 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday. Circulation and other user services are available 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 1:15 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Information service is available 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday only.

The University Map and Design Library will be open with circulation service 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Information service is available 9:30 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday only.

A note about recycling

Patti Cook, UW's waste management coordinator, writes: "It's recycling cart cleaning time again . . . please make sure all the 68-gallon carts are outside on Monday night for Tuesday, May 2, cleaning." Cook is in the spotlight tomorrow, for a noon-hour talk on "composting and vermicomposting", sponsored by the staff association social committee. Place: Davis Centre 1350. Time: 12 noon.

The phone rings at St. Jerome's

St. Jerome's College has a new voice-mail system, in effect as of last Friday. The familiar phone number, 884-8110, will still reach the college switchboard, but there's now also a second number, 884-8111, that reaches a 24-hour-a-day "automated attendant". Through that line, callers can key in extensions and leave messages.

In the Humanities Theatre

Look for lots of school buses along the ring road in the next couple of days. Tuesday morning at 10:15, the theatre hosts Matt Maxwell, a Toronto-based singer who does rock and roll in French; kids from local schools will be flocking to hear him. Wednesday at 10 a.m., there's another school performance, "Jack and the Beanstalk" from the Actors' Trunk Company, Windsor. Thursday night, the show in Humanities is more adult: "The Wild Guys", described as "a satirical look at men" and brought in by Waterloo Showtime.

So here we are

It's a new term, full of new possibilities. A new fiscal year for UW, too, full of new -- challenges, shall we say? An immediate item of good news, at least for heavy computer users: the department of computing services has reduced the hourly charge for use of the "terminal server" that links off-campus users to UW computers over phone lines. The logon message on the terminal server gives the details.

I am back from my brief trip; many thanks to colleague John Morris, who produced Thursday's and Friday's Daily Bulletins in my absence. And as of today, the Daily Bulletin has a somewhat new look, because the hypertext (World Wide Web) version is now the default. It's also still available, obviously, through the UWinfo gopher, and on the newsgroups uw.general and uw.campus-news. Please be patient with me as I experiment with details over the coming days; suggestions are welcome.
