Canada Day is 16 days off
And the organizers of UW's
Canada Day celebrations on Saturday, July 1, are busy making
arrangements for refreshments, musicians, clowns and flags. Here's a
message from Eric Sutherland, coordinator of volunteers for the party:
Canada Day needs you! Come join the party by the lake on July 1st. There
will be 40,000 of your closest friends all watching the beautiful
fireworks, as well as all sorts of activities during the day. We need
over 200 volunteers to make everything run as planned. If you would like
to lend a helping hand, then please contact Eric Sutherland at
esutherland@jeeves, or at 747-0286.
A volunteer meeting is set for June 27 at 4:30 p.m. in Davis Centre
room 1350. Volunteers are also urged to show up by Columbia Lake all
day on Friday, June 30, for set-up; and they'll be wanted during the day
for the event itself, and on Sunday, July 2, for clean-up.
Notes on the Feast of Corpus Christi
- The
faculty of arts has a splendid
day today for its annual staff barbecue. The people who keep the wheels
turning -- from psychology labs to language labs and secretarial offices
-- have been invited to the noon-hour event at the barbecue pit by
Laurel Creek.
- Helga Kutz-Harder, principal of St. Paul's United College, has been in
hospital since Monday undergoing treatment for "heart irregularities".
She's expecting to be sent home this morning and hoping to be back at
the college on Monday. Kutz-Harder is now two weeks away from her
wedding -- she's to be married July 1 to Bob Mills, a United Church
of Canada official in New Brunswick who will be taking early retirement
to move to Waterloo.
- Birthday greetings to Jan Narveson of the philosophy
department, who among other distinctions is the author (for nearly
two decades now) of the
Cecilia on Music column in the UW Gazette.
- The co-op department and the math faculty have announced
details of their one-day conference for employers of math co-op
students. Under the title "MathWorks", it'll take place a week from
today, June 22. Several dozen employer representatives will hear talks
about UW's programs, tour mathematics labs, and get
presentations from three of the research institutes that have ties to
the math faculty.
