Nice day, if it don't rain
It's payday for most staff and faculty, and it's a birthday for
Al MacKenzie, UW's director of security, or so an informant tells me.
Two good reasons for celebration right there.
Celebrate? "Celebrate Before the Lord" is the title of a show being
sponsored tonight by the
Waterloo
Christian Fellowship. "The Continentals" perform, starting
at 7:30 in Davis Centre room 1351. Admission is free.
Why did the chicken stamp angrily?
Because it had a cross walk! But only until August 14, when the
seven crosswalks on UW's ring road are to be removed. Signs to that
effect were posted earlier this week.
The
change was first
announced last January, when an advisory committee said they
should be taken out, and the provost approved the recommendation.
At that time, provost Jim Kalbfleisch noted that the crosswalks
"have come under increasing criticism because
they do not conform to provincial standards for signage and
sightlines, and are not recognized as crosswalks by some motorists. Also,
they are often ignored or improperly used by
pedestrians."
As the Gazette reported, the committee said that after taking out the
crosswalks, UW should "increase signage" and "improve traffic enforcement".
Development and alumni director
The alumni affairs and development offices, now combined into one
department, are getting a director at last. They've been headless
since Don Livingston, director of development, moved to York University
more than a year ago, and Joy Roberts, director of alumni affairs,
suddenly left the university several months ago.
The new leader is Rudy Putns, who will come to Waterloo the day after
Labour Day as "executive director, development and alumni
affairs". Formerly director of development at McMaster University and
director of development and alumni affairs at Ryerson Polytechnic
University, Putns is currently senior director of strategic planning and
development at Victoria Hospital in London.
Roger Downer, UW's vice-president (university relations), said in
announcing the appointment that he was meeting yesterday with Putns
-- rhymes with "buttons" -- "to brief him on the current organisational
structure of the office", and that Putns would be visiting UW again
during August.
Community volunteers wanted
Here are some of the current needs listed by the Volunteer Action Centre:
- Survey volunteers -- an agency dealing with health issues is looking
for volunteers to participate in a focus group that would test a
marketing method. One hour of time is required on a single occasion. A
formal thank-you will be given to all participants. Listing 069-1290
- Musical festival assistants -- organized and reliable volunteers
are needed to assist with a festival in September. The event is in
support of a local organization that promotes health care. This position
has flexible hours and a commitment of one to three months. Listing
074-1296
- Community links volunteers -- a short-term opportunity running
August 14-28. You will assist with making follow-up phone calls to
various social service providers in the region to update information on
a computer database. Hours may be flexible, about 15 to 20 hours in
total and could include three evening hours. Listing 011-1302
The VAC can be reached at 742-8610.
The Blue Stew Duo
That's who's playing Saturday night at the University Club. (Vocalist
for the Blue Stew Duo is Katrina Maugham, of UW's human resources
department, a voice that's made quite an impression on campus over
the years.) It's jazz, with New Orleans cuisine to match: "chicken and
shrimp creole on dirty rice", mango sorbet and such-like. Tickets
for the evening are $23.95 plus tax, and there are still some
available, the Club advises -- call 888-4088.
Utility shutoffs are noted
Electrical power (and heating, cooling and ventilation) will be turned
off in the Humanities building and the Minota Hagey Residence on
Sunday from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. ("Computer equipment should be shut down
in an orderly fashion," the plant operations department suggests.)
And in the Optometry building, both electrical power and cold water
will be shut off on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Again, it would be wise
to turn off computers beforehand.
Still having a ball
The national junior basketball championships continue at UW and Wilfrid
Laurier University. Four women's games take place at UW today, and four
men's games at WLU. Medal play begins Saturday, with UW hosting the men
(games at 11:00, 1:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 8:00) and winds up Sunday, with
UW hosting all the play. That'll be a busy day, with two games
starting at 9 a.m. (one in the main gym and one in the smaller gym),
one at 11, one at noon, one at 1:00, and one at 2:00; the men's
gold medal game starts at 6 p.m. and the women's at 8 p.m.
