The last day of classes!
It comes as a relief for some, a signal of terror for others (exams
start Monday), and for still others a real milestone, the end of
their full-time university education. If you're in that category,
take note that fall convocation will be held October 21.
Various end-of-term celebrations are set for today, ranging from a
party sponsored by the Sikh Students Association (dinner and tennis)
to a noontime barbecue organized by the
Computer
Science Club. The barbecue is being held outside the Math and
Computer building, near the Bombshelter pub, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
and all are welcome -- hot dogs and hamburgers $1 each.
It's Pizza Pizza pizza night in the Village 1 cafeteria. Says Michele
Grondin of food services: "Everyone is welcome to enjoy 2 slices of
pizza, caesar salad, cheesy bread and a 16-ounce drink for $5.99. The
servery will be serving this special from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m."
And in the open air . . .
The really big party for today is the "open air pub" at the Bombshelter
in the Student Life Centre. "The day is going to be a huge amount of
fun," says Trish Mumby, publicity pinwheel for the Federation of
Students. "They are licensing the entire yard area (around the volleyball
courts), having tons of great prizes, and of course Mike Something!"
Now I don't know who Mike Something is, but I do understand the
concepts of "$500 volleyball tourney" and "great corn roast and
barbecue". The end-of-term bash on the Bomber's patio starts at noon.
Parking manager is named
UW's new manager of parking services is Elaine Koolstra, formerly
accounting manager for the bookstore. She officially started work on
Monday, says the director of security, Al MacKenzie. The position has
been empty for some months, since the retirement of Phil McKay. Koolstra
probably won't be surprised if I ask to interview her before the first
issue of the Gazette in September.
There's no Gazette today
In fact there won't be another Gazette issue until September 6. Until
then, please make the most of this Daily Bulletin. And if you work in
an area of the university where many people don't have computerized
access to the Bulletin, would you consider running off a paper copy each
morning and posting it on a convenient bulletin board?
As usual when the Gazette isn't published, the human resources department
will be circulating its
Positions
Available list on paper to all departments; it's also available on UWinfo.
Just one position is listed this week -- Course Notes Administrator
(grade USG 4) for the
Institute
for Improvement in Quality and Productivity.
A workshop, a play, more games
Also happening today:
- The Women in Mathematics Committee presents a workshop on
"Student-Centred Teaching in Mathematics", by Pat Rogers of York
University. She'll speak at 3:30 p.m. in Math and Computer room 5158,
about "the pros and cons of turning the classroom into a place where
students do all of the work and most of the learning".
- A busload from the
Graduate
Student Association is off to the
Stratford Festival
tonight to see "The Merry Wives of Windsor".
- The national junior basketball championships continue at UW and
Wilfrid Laurier University. Today it's women's games being played in
the Physical Activities Complex: Nova Scotia vs. Alberta at 1:30,
Saskatchewan vs. Newfoundland at 3:30, Quebec vs. somebody (a local
volunteer team, I understand) at 6:30, and New Brunswick vs. Manitoba
at 8:30.
