News about fire and water
Fire: At 9 this morning, fire engines were hooking up to the
hydrants near Engineering 2 and traffic was being blocked off from that
area. Sergeant Wayne Shortt of the UW police says the problem was a
tar kettle being used by a roofing contractor; it overheated to the point
of catching fire. No injuries, no significant damage.
Water: Hot and cold water (and gas, nitrogen and compressed air)
will be turned off in several laboratories in Chemistry 2 tomorrow
from 9 to 11 a.m. for maintenance work.
And a word about blood
"Blood supplies are always running
out in the summer," says Lisa Ballinger, a math student volunteer
who's helping to organize today's
Red Cross blood drive in the Student Life Centre.
"We need 125 donors," she writes. "We've already been experiencing
shortages. Toronto has already issued an appeal for donors -- I think
the only reason we haven't done the same is because we're going to be
worse off a couple of months from now. At last check, we particularly
needed O positive and negative donors."
The clinic will be open to take your blood from 1:00 to 4:30 this
afternoon. And if the need for "the gift of life" isn't enough to
persuade you to drop by, Ballinger mentions that "brownies and
strawberries" will be served.
The Sisters leave Notre Dame
Notre Dame College announced yesterday that the building is being sold
to St. Jerome's College. The School Sisters of Notre Dame, who
have operated the residence since it was founded in 1963, "will take
leave of their ministry there".
As of May 1, 1996, Notre Dame will get a new name to "make clear the
continuing tradition of a women's residence embodying the ideals of
the Roman Catholic tradition within the modern university setting".
Said Sister Rose Mary Sander, "provincial" (leader) of the School Sisters
in southern Ontario: "We thank St. Jerome's for their readiness to carry
the ministry of Notre Dame College into the future." The School Sisters
have been working with the Congregation of the Resurrection, the order
of priests that founded St. Jerome's, on various ministries since 1871.
In memory of students
- The annual "Sunshine Chamber Music Recital" will be held today and
is in memory of Simon A. Gibson, who was a co-op student working for
Microsoft at the time he was killed in a climbing accident. The
recital begins at 12:30 in the Conrad Grebel College chapel; admission
is free.
- A memorial service is to be held Monday, July 17, for Chad
Cronkwright, the anthropology student who was killed Tuesday in an
accident at Toronto's SkyDome. The department of drama (Cronkwright was
an enthusiast for campus theatre) is organizing Monday's event for
7:30 p.m. in the Theatre of the Arts.
