You could give them a ring
Among the treasure trove held in UW's central lost-and-found depot
is a lady's ring that was found in February and appears to be fairly
valuable. The owner can claim it by getting in touch with the director
of security, Al MacKenzie, to identify it.
All kinds of good things end up in the lost-and-found bins, says
UW police sergeant Eldon Nantais. "We've got boxes and boxes of
eyeglasses," he comments, and everything else from textbooks to
clothing.
The lost-and-found is part of UW police headquarters in the General
Services Complex, over by the smokestack: phone 888-4911 (from a UW
extension phone, ext. 4911).
An honour for a dean
John Thompson, UW's dean of science, is the winner of a gold award:
the Canadian Society of Plant Physiologists' Medal, presented June 20
during the group's annual meeting at the University of Guelph. The
medal is awarded only once in three years, "in recognition of
outstanding published contributions or distinguished service to the
field of plant physiology in Canada". Says a colleague: "It was clear
that Dr. Thompson qualified for this prestigious medal for both his
numerous scientific contributions and professional service to the field
of plant physiology."
Centre seeks volunteers
The local Volunteer Action Centre is looking for people, along
these lines:
Fundraising committee -- this is an opportunity to assist an organization
in raising much-needed funds which will help adults in our community
learn to read. You will assist the chair of the fundraising committee to
develop creative fundraising plans, organize fundraisers and participate
in events. Approximately six hours a month for six months to one year
is preferred. Listing 048-107.
Newsletter editor -- an editor is needed to gather material and format a
quarterly newsletter. Subject matter relates to sexual abuse, community
mediation, victim offender programs and restorative justice v. punitive
justice. Computer skills and experience in layout and graphics would be
an asset. Listing 017-1274
As
Venezuela
marks its independence day
I know for a fact that several hundred people read yesterday's
Daily Bulletin, but exactly one of them wrote to advise me that it
was dated "Monday, July 4". (Yesterday was a Tuesday.) And that one
error report came not from the UW campus, but from Massachusetts.
Hmm.
The permanent version of yesterday's Bulletin now says "Tuesday".
