Daily Bulletin, Tuesday, January 3, 1995

SWIFTLY fly the years -- it's 1995 already -- and swiftly flies the
snow too, this morning. In its first day, the winter term is living up
to its name.

Classes have begun, and registration runs today through Thursday. Briefly,
here's some advice about undergraduate registration, extracted from the
printed instructions issued by the registrar's office. Register at the
Physical Activities Complex ("blue activities area"), from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
preferably today if you're in arts, science, environmental studies or
independent studies, tomorrow if you're in math, engineering or applied
health sciences. If you also need a photo ID card, you'll have to go to
the registrar's office in Needles Hall. Course drop-and-add centres are
in operation in each of the faculties (arts and ES, it's on the second
floor of Needles Hall).

A LINEUP was forming outside the bookstore before 8:30 this morning. To
help deal with the beginning-of-term crowds, the bookstore (and the UW
Shop, across the mall from it in South Campus Hall) have announced extended
hours this week. Both stores will be open 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today,
Wednesday and Thursday; 8:30 to 5 on Friday; noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Next week they're back to regular hours: Monday to Friday 8:30 to 5,
Saturday 12 to 4.

The bookstore also notes that the last day to return unused winter term
textbooks is January 14, if you end up buying the wrong thing.

DEDUCTIBLES: With the new year, there are some small changes in the
coverage provided by the employee health and dental plans. Full information
is being sent out to faculty and staff. Examples: the deductible on the
drug plan, which was $42 per person ($84 per family) last year, is going
up to $43 ($86). The maximum coverage under the dental plan goes up
from $1,355 for the year to $1,390.

A note from the human resources department: "Please remember to submit
your extended health care and dental claims via the Human Resources
office, GSC. All 1993 claims must be submitted by the end of 1994; 1994
claims must be submitted by the end of 1995. Unclaimed extended health
care expenses from October, November, and December, 1994 can be included
in your 1995 claim if the deductible was not met in 1994."

SPORTS RESULTS: I don't have full results from the Athena and Warrior
ventures during the Christmas break, but I can report that the basketball
Athenas finished third (a win and two losses) in the tournament they
hosted in the Physical Activities Complex last week. Queen's University
won the four-team event. The hockey Warriors played four games over
the break, winning one (over Calgary, 6-4) and losing three.

IF IT KEEPS SNOWING, the grounds section of plant operations will be
looking for early-morning snow shovellers. There are plenty of shovels,
says supervisor Brian O'Riley, but he's looking for strong backs to wield
them. The job pays $8.10 an hour. Show up at 7:30 any snowy weekday
morning at the grounds section in the General Services Complex courtyard,
and they'll put a shovel into your hands and tell you where to start.

AND A happy new year to us all!
