T.G.I.F., and in particular the F. before the winter "study break" --
the campus will be very quiet over the next few days, once the jazz
squeals of tonight's Mardi Gras fall silent at midnight. Classes
in all faculties are cancelled Monday and Tuesday. They'll resume
next Wednesday in engineering and mathematics, but students in the other
four faculties have a full week for reading, studying, skiing or
beaching, as taste and necessity dictate.

As for Mardi Gras, well, Pat Cunningham of the development office sends
this "checklist" for the event, which starts at 4:30 in the north campus
athletics complex:

     1. Dress casually and comfortably -- leave the neckties at home.
     2. Bring money to exchange for Downey Dollars for food and
         games of chance.
     3. Check the menu suggestions in Wednesday's Gazette (combination
plates and single food items available) and come hungry.
     4. Remember 50 cents for parking lot X.
     5. Be among the first 120 guests, who will get an "early bird
ticket" on the 5:30 p.m. wheel spin (win a $30 gift certificate
         from Fastbreaks.
     6. Bid on some of the 150 items on the Silent Auction table.
     7. Enjoy the jazz performers in the Bourbon Street Cafe.
     8. Check if your ticket is one of the three winners in the Mardi
Gras raffle draw at 9 p.m.
     9. Bring enthusiasm . . . and friends.

She notes: "The $5 ticket is only for admission to the event. There are
additional charges for food, drinks, and games. Proceeds from all areas
will support equipment and material needs of UW."

CO-OP INTERVIEWS are in full swing, and there are more employers (and
potential jobs) for the spring term than originally expected. Result:
the main interview period has been extended through next Thursday,
February 23, says Olaf Naese of the co-op department. "Student job
ranking forms will still be available from co-op education on Friday,
February 24, after 10 a.m."

FLOOR REPAIRS are under way, not just in the Village 1 cafeteria but also
in the Modern Languages building. Result: one of the ground floor exit
doors will be out of operation Monday through Wednesday, the plant
operations department says.

ENTERTAINMENT: "Pandemonium" plays at the Grad House Saturday night. . . .
The drama department's "Oleanna" has its last two performances tonight
and tomorrow at 8. . . . And the Bombshelter pub in the Campus Centre
has a "spring break beach party" tonight.

SPORTS WEEKEND: The west division volleyball championship game will be
played at the Physical Activities Complex tomorrow night, UW's Warriors
("the Black Plague") facing Windsor. "Wear black," suggests Jennifer
McCormick of the athletics department, who's trying to drum up fan support.
Tickets for the game are $6 general admission, students $5, children free.
It starts at 8 p.m.

The hockey Warriors are in their playoffs too, and will face Wilfrid
Laurier on Tuesday night (Waterloo Mutual Arena, 7:30). The winner of
that semifinal game moves on to face Western in a best-two-of-three series,
tentatively to be played February 23, 26 and 27. The Warriors have made
it to this stage in competition despite Wednesday night's 2-1 loss to
Laurier in their last regular season game.

Other scores: On Wednesday, both basketball teams lost to the University
of Guelph: the Athenas by a score of 56-48, the Warriors by 86-60.

CONGRATULATIONS, finally, to Pauline Clough of the office of research.
Colleagues report that as of today she's marking 20 years of accomplishment
on UW's staff.
