FASS OPENS tonight at 8, and while the grapevine says Monday night's
rehearsal didn't finish until 1:20 in the morning, the actual performance
of "Village Don of the Dead" will surely be a little speedier than that.
FASS has been hitting UW stages each winter since 1962, which makes it
one of the university's oldest traditions -- almost as old as some of
the jokes that will, I trust, draw laughs in the Humanities Theatre
tonight. Tickets: 888-4908.

GRADE REPORTS from the fall term can be picked up in the registrar's office
between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day -- that's if you are an undergraduate
in arts, ES, mathematics, science or applied health sciences, and are
on a full-time schedule again this winter term. Engineering students
can find their grade reports in their departmental offices, and co-op
students from all faculties who are off campus this term can expect their
reports in the mail. Optometry and independent studies grade reports
have been sent to departmental offices also, and students at Renison and
St. Jerome's College should look to the college offices for their reports.

UW ON TV: The successes of the Waterloo Region economy will be the topic
of TVOntario's current affairs program "Studio 2" tonight from 8 to 9.
Part of the program is being broadcast live (from, of all places, the
Brick Brewery downtown) and part is previously taped. Students working
in UW's computer graphics and robotics labs are likely to be seen. One
segment of the program deals with the role of UW in the regional economy;
it features Ted Cross of UW's technology transfer and licensing office.
Fred McCourt and Janusz Pawliszyn of the chemistry department were also
interviewed, about inventions that have been moved successfully from the
lab to the marketplace.

WRONG DATE: Katrina Maugham of the human resources department sends
word of an error in the "Get Up and Grow" brochure that's just been
distributed by the staff development and training committee. "Under the
section for Non-Management Professional, Core Interpersonal Skills," she
writes, "the last date, April 4, is incorrect. It should read March 14."

AIDING JAPAN: Renison College has agreed to act as a collection
point for financial contributions to the "Kobe Fund" which has been set
up by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto to aid those
suffering due to the Kobe earthquake. The link is a natural once, since
UW's East Asian studies program is based at Renison. Barbara Checketts,
business manager at the college, says donations can be sent to her in
care of Renison, and will be forwarded to JCCC on behalf of the UW
community. Receipts will be issued for donations over $10.

BLOWOUT SALE: That's the label that Federation of Students businesses are
using for three days of bargains this week. The Campus Shop and other
Fed subsidiaries have set up in the great hall of the campus centre (from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and are offering special deals, to reduce inventory
before they move into their new locations in the expanded CC later this
month.

UTILITY SHUTDOWN: Chilled water will be shut off tomorrow from 8 a.m. to
2 p.m. in parts of Engineering 2, the plant operations department advises.
