CLUBS take centre stage today, as celebrations of the Campus Centre
expansion continue. More than 25 "cultural, service and interest clubs"
are expected to have displays and to show off their new meeting and
office space.

Among the groups making itself known will be the campus branch of Amnesty
International, which will be asking people to donate money or sign a
gigantic letter to free a token "prisoner of conscience" who will be held
captive in a small jail.

And from the serious to the frivolous: tonight, the CC festivities
continue with an all-night movie marathon, starting at 9:00. On the
big screen: "Battlestar Galactica", "Monty Python's The Meaning of
Life", "Breakfast Club", and "Creature from the Black Lagoon". Bring
your sleeping bag; the organizers will supply popcorn.

There will be late-night desserts and cappuccino in the food services
outlet, which I have been calling Marketplace but which isn't going to
have that name, really. The name is Brubaker's, and "the sign will be
here in a few days," says Mark Murdoch, director of food services. Why
Brubaker's? Well, much of the campus is built on the old Brubacher
farm -- the farmhouse still stands as a museum, north of Columbia Street
-- and the CC food outlet emphasizes baked goods, with nothing fried at all.

Tomorrow morning, the CC has a pancake breakfast, from 8 to 11 --
food for a dollar, or free if you're about to be a 1995 graduate.

ALSO TODAY: This year's Spinoza-Meir Lecture will be given tonight, at
8:00 in Needles Hall room 3001. The speaker is Shemaryahu Talmon of
the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, talking about an extraordinary era
in Jewish history, under the title "Waiting for the Messiah: the
Spiritual World of the Dead Sea Scrolls Covenanters".

The Native Students Association continues its arts and crafts display,
"Spirit of Turtle Island", this afternoon in the Davis Centre foyer.

LIVE AUCTION: More than 35 "great gifts from local businesses" are up
for auction tomorrow at noontime. They're things that were not sold at
last month's Mardi Gras celebration, in support of the Community
Campaign. Proceeds from the auction will go to support student life
projects, including computer workstations for the new Campus Centre.

The auction will be held Friday from 11:30 to 1:00 in the ICR lounge in
the Davis Centre. Acting as auctioneer: Al Galbraith, of UW's plant
operations department. Payment by cash, cheque or credit card will be
accepted.

CORRECTION: A headline in yesterday's Gazette says that the UW credit
union will be having its annual meeting "tomorrow", which would be today.
Fortunately the article under the headline is right: the credit union
meeting is next Thursday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in the Flamingo Room of
South Campus Hall. All credit union members are encouraged to be
there -- there's business to do, and wine and cheese to consume. And
the credit union is looking for 1995-96 members for the board of
directors, credit committee and audit committee; the credit union office
in the General Services Complex can provide more information.
