The day we come back

Yesterday's Bulletin referred to "Monday, January 2" as the day the libraries reopen after the Christmas and New Year's holiday. Sorry -- ain't no such day. The libraries will reopen Tuesday, January 2, which is the day faculty and staff come back to work after the break. Registration also starts that day, and classes begin Wednesday, January 3.

The day we get paid

Yes, today is payday for everybody on campus: faculty, regular staff, biweekly paid staff, even those on the "casual" payroll. No wonder there are so many Christmas lunches happening today!

Next payday for those on the monthly list will be Wednesday, January 24 (rather than the usual last Friday of the month).

There's no Gazette today

If there had been, here's the Position Available notice from the human resources department that would have appeared in it:
This job list becomes effective Wednesday, December 20, 1995. The following research funded position is currently available:

Secretary Earth Sciences, USG 3: Proven secretarial abilities with word processing skills, preferably with windows-based programs. Good interpersonal and organizational skills. Knowledge of university policy and procedures would be an asset. This is a part-time 25 hours per week and contingent upon funding.

The university welcomes and encourages applications from the designated employment equity groups: visible minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and aboriginal people. For more information call: University of Waterloo 885-1211 ext. 2524.

A Waterloo Christmas Web site

In yesterday's Bulletin I listed several Web sites with Christmas novelties and information. Right here at Waterloo, there's a similar site of some interest, maintained by Terry Stewart of the applied health sciences faculty; it can be found at http://www.ahs.uwaterloo.ca/~stewart/Advent95.html.

Says Stewart: "I am thinking about co-ordinating a WWW Advent Calendar next year, containing original work by UW artists, writers, poets, computer programmers, webmasters, etc. I am hoping to find 25 people who would be willing to design a page to add to the Calendar. Anyone interested could contact me: stewart@healthy.uwaterloo.ca."

The candles of our lives

And I've found a Hanukkah Web site: http://www.jcn18.com/hanukkah/.

A request for nominations

A memo from UW's president went out yesterday to department heads:
The Senate Nominating Committee for Honorary Degrees meets from time to time to discuss nominations for the seven special honorary degrees and the Doctor of Laws (LLD). It then recommends to Senate that the names of those individuals whom it feels are qualified to be approved for inclusion in the pool of candidates. At the moment the pool is so shallow it is in danger of running dry. Nominations are urgently needed. Attached is a copy of the criteria used by the committee. If you require further information, please contact the Secretary of the Committee, Dianne Scheifele, Secretariat, ext. 3183.

The Hagey Lectures are the premier lectures at the University of Waterloo. The series was established in 1970 to honour the contribution of Dr. J. G. Hagey, a founder and first President of the University of Waterloo. Their purpose is to bring to the University each year an outstanding individual who has distinguished himself or herself internationally in some area of scholarly or creative endeavour, to deliver a public lecture, and to spend several days on campus participating in informal exchanges with faculty and students. No restrictions are placed on the area of scholarly or creative endeavour. Attached is a copy of the criteria used to identify speakers. Please forward nominations to the Chair of the Hagey Lecture Series (Vera Golini, St. Jerome's College, fax 519-884-5759, e-mail vgolini@watarts.uwaterloo.ca) or to the Faculty Association Office (c/o Secretary, Mrs. Jean Spowart, MC 4004, ext. 3787, fax 519-746-7344, facassoc@watserv1.uwaterloo.ca).

A note about health and safety

UW's joint health and safety committee meets this afternoon (Needles Hall 3004, 1:30 p.m.). On the agenda: accident reports, fire reports, bicycle safety, building inspections, a meeting between Ontario university safety officers and the provincial minister of labour.

And a note about security

A brand-new video-cassette recorder was stolen over the weekend from Arts Lecture Hall room 116, says Ron Russell, director of the audio-visual centre. "This was a new unit purchased for winter term classes."

Says Russell: "We have a relatively low incidence of theft and vandalism compared to other Ontario universities. Items are often 'borrowed' without being booked . . . these items are eventually returned, but this 'borrowing' inconveniences our regular clients who expect equipment to be available."

But this time it was definitely theft. Gone is Panasonic VCR, model PV 4564, serial number I5SA40210. "If you have any information," Russell asks, please call the UW police at ext. 3211 or audio-visual at ext. 4001.
