Departments that are still using the central gopher to provide some of their information are being notified this week that they've got to move to Web space, and fast.
The Volunteer Action Centre promotes volunteerism and matches volunteers with positions in local charitable organizations where they can truly make a difference to our community. Volunteers are recruited for over one hundred charitable agencies and a vast array of programs and services. The Volunteer Action Centre is always looking for volunteers to help in the following areas:Accounting, Administration, Arts and Crafts, Befriending, Bingo, Boards and Committees, Child Care, Clerical, Computers, Driving, Food Services, Fundraising, Handiperson, Health Care, Library, Museum, Public Relations, Recreation, Research, Shopping, Sports, Swimming, Teaching and Tutoring, and Therapy/Counselling.
At our office, there are also unique opportunities that don't quite fit these categories and there are short-term or event volunteering ideas.
Over the holiday season, think about how you can contribute as a volunteer. Then call the Volunteer Action Centre at 742-8610 early in the new year. We can help match your interests, skills and availability with a satisfying volunteer opportunity. As a volunteer, the spirit of giving continues throughout the year.
And if you would like to start the New Year in the spirit of volunteerism, consider giving some of your time to help at Festival of the Night on New Year's Eve. Volunteers are still needed for face painting, to do security and safety patrols, as stage helpers, to assist with clean-up, tend fires at Victoria Park, decorate the clock tower and move bales of hay. Please call 741-2902 and let them know how you can help.
As you will recall, in addition to the noon hour lecture, we use this event to highlight UW faculty, staff, students, etc., who have had work published in the previous year. As 1995 draws to a close, we thought it would be a good time to remind authors to send copies of their books for inclusion in our displays, which are also a part of the event. She can be reached at sbelling@library.
