United Way beats 1994 total
Final figures are in from UW's campaign to raise funds for
the United Way.
The campaign is at last officially "closed", says campaign chair
Helen Kilbride: "We shall send all donations we receive from now on
directly to the K-W United Way office, where they will be added to
our total and, at a given point, a definitive final tally will be taken."
She also notes that the random draw was made last week to award 72
prizes to on-campus donors. "We shall be contacting them during the
coming week."
So, how did the campaign go? Givings fell a little short
of the $160,000 goal, but were ahead of last year's total by some
$5,000. Altogether, the United Way received from staff, faculty,
retirees, graduate students, special contributions and other
sources, $154,269.
The participation rate among staff and faculty was 23 per cent (730
people out of a potential 3,155), which is considerably short of the
35 per cent goal. (Last year, there were 747 donors out of a
potential 3,211.)
Advice from the police
Al MacKenzie, UW's director of security, seeks to remind faculty,
staff and students
not to leave any personal valuables
or "smaller attractive items" such as laptop computers, radios, and cameras
in their offices at UW over the Christmas holiday. "These items should
be secured in a cabinet or removed to their home for safekeeping."
A second message from the police chief:
There has been an increase in the number of vehicle thefts in the
K-W area. When your vehicle is parked anywhere on campus, at shopping
centres or in your driveway, ensure that the vehicle is locked and
that no parcels or other attractive items are left inside the vehicle
in sight of a passerby. Secure items in the trunk if at all possible.
University thanks its donors
There's a party at Federation Hall tonight, perhaps a little more
elegant than the usual Fed Hall bash. It's the annual December
thank-you reception, hosted by president James Downey, for donors to
the university, who will "enjoy a cup of good cheer and exchange
the compliments of the season with friends".
Linda Kieswetter of the development office says tonight's guests
are "donors who are members of our annual giving clubs: Quarter Century
Club ($250), Waterloo 500 ($500), and President's Committee ($1,000).
Individuals invited to this year's event have made a donation at one
of those levels over the past year. In total we have over 1,800
members in these clubs!" And many of them, she might have added, are
faculty and staff members.
Ding dong, merrily in ML
One of Waterloo's traditions is the singing of Christmas carols in
the lobby of the Modern Languages building -- is this year really
only the 11th annual festivity of its kind? Jake Willms, assistant to
the dean of arts, organizes the event and leads the singing; all
are welcome and there will be light refreshments. Tomorrow is the
day. The music starts at 12:15, and I know I'll be there.
