Optometry wing opens today
The $3.2 million new wing of the Optometry building -- UW's only
academic building north of Columbia Street -- will be opened with
ceremonies at 2:00 this afternoon. Andrew Telegdi, Waterloo's Member of
Parliament, sent word yesterday that he couldn't attend the event
after all, but Ontario minister of labour Elizabeth Witmer is expected
to be on hand along with representatives of optometry alumni and
the optical industry. The building was funded with a combination of
public money (through the Canada-Ontario "infrastructure" program) and
private contributions.
Master of ceremonies for this afternoon's event will be John
Thompson, dean of science, whose faculty includes the
school of
optometry.
Company supports work terms
The chief executive of Com Dev Ltd., a high-tech firm based in Cambridge
just south of Kitchener, yesterday announced a
research award program to support student work terms to study microwave
technology and communications systems.
Val O'Donovan made a $250,000 pledge to Campaign Waterloo. The program
that will support up to four student work terms for the next 10 years.
The work terms created at UW are to support research and development
in microwave technology and personal communications systems.
The awards will be for students at the end of their third year of
undergraduate study and will cover their final two work terms. The research
will be conducted at UW under the supervision of faculty members, said
Sujeet Chaudhuri, who chairs UW's
electrical and computer engineering
department.
"The economic growth and future of this region depends to a large
extent upon our ability to exploit the creative minds of students and
researchers within our institutes of higher learning," said Roger Downer,
UW vice-president, university relations. "This will ensure that, when it is
appropriate to do so, their ideas are made available to the private sector.
The Com Dev donation enhances our ability to do this."
Major meetings set next week
Just to recap, here's the schedule of when whose behind should be in
what seat, as the university plans how to cope with government
funding cuts:
- Department chairs and heads, Monday at 9 a.m., Needles Hall 3001.
- "Town hall meetings" open to the whole community, Tuesday at
8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., Theatre of the Arts.
- Staff association annual meeting with president James Downey as
guest speaker, Tuesday at 12 noon, Davis Centre room 1302.
- Faculty association annual meeting with closed session to discuss
the possibility of unionization, Wednesday at 2 p.m., Engineering
Lecture room 101.
- Senate finance committee, Wednesday, December 13, 3 p.m., Needles
Hall room 3001.
This week's ribbon is white
"There are white ribbons available," says Tricia Mumby of the Federation
of Students, "at the MathSoc office, Math C&D, and the Fed office.
White ribbons are for men to wear at this time of year. They represent
men's opposition to the issue of violence against women. Drop by
and wear one, and show your support."
Wednesday, December 6, marks the sixth anniversary of the "Montreal
massacre" that killed 14 female students at Montreal's
Ecole Polytechnique. A memorial
service will start at 6 p.m. that day at Siegfried Hall, St. Jerome's
College.
Library wants its books back
December 14, less than two weeks away, is the
due date
for UW library
books that have been out on "term loan".
"Beat the rush," a memo suggests, and return (or renew) your books
before the last minute, when there's bound to be a long lineup at
the circulation desk. Term loan books renewed now will be due
April 10, 1996.
Happening today and on the weekend
Happy December, and here's some of what's happening:
- The Pragma Council, advising the school of urban and regional
planning, winds up its annual fall conference today, continuing to
discuss the future of the Greater Toronto Area.
- The Tamil Students Association sponsors a video presentation
tonight (7 p.m., Davis Centre room 1304) giving a Tamil viewpoint on
the bloody ethnic warfare in beautiful Sri Lanka.
- UW's Stage Band presents a cabaret-style concert tonight in the
great hall of Conrad Grebel College. Music includes Chuck Mangione,
George Gershwin and other not-so-stuffy figures. Tickets are
$8 (students $5) from the music office at Grebel, phone 885-0220
ext. 226. The tunes start at 8 p.m.
- The University Choir performs at 8:00 Saturday night in Benton
Street Baptist Church, with choral works by Mozart and Handel. Again,
the music office at Grebel has tickets.
- Canadian Union of Public Employees local 793 is holding its
Christmas dinner and dance Saturday night. Hope somebody is taking
pictures!
Special note to gopher users
Starting today, Daily Bulletin service on the UWinfo gopher is
reduced to the current Bulletin only. Gopher users can select a
link that will pop them into UWinfo Webspace if they want to look
at back files of the Bulletin. (And, in general, gopher users at
UW are being advised to switch to Web browers as fast as possible;
the UWinfo gopher is a dying critter.)
