Crosswalks removed today

Ring road crosswalks, which have been deemed less-than-standard campus traffic controllers, are being officially removed starting today (weather permitting). The crosswalks, noted provost Jim Kalbfleisch, "have come under increasing criticism because they do not conform to provincial standards for signage and sightlines, and are not recognized as crosswalks by some motorists."

Traffic will now be controlled on the ring road by increased signage and improved traffic enforcement. "Rumble strips" will alert drivers of approaching stop signs, and raised walkways across the road will act as ersatz speed bumps in an effort to "calm" traffic, says David Churchill of plant operations.

One poster on the uw.general newsgroup has concerns, though: "Can we assume thatthis increased signage will be of the form 'cross road at own risk: the University of Waterloo will not be liable for personal injury, loss, inconvenience or damage, whether direct, incidental ...'"

Conferences springing up in the late summer

Two groups are on campus today and for the next few days:

-- A group of about 30 teachers from secondary schools, community colleges and adult training classes across Canada are attending a conference on teaching entrepreneuship. The teachers, staying at Village 2, will learn how to creatively teach organization and marketing skills, will be involved in a science and technology workshop and will learn how to integrate the Junior Achievement program into their classrooms, says Hildred Nelson, a conference organizer and member of UW's Canadian Industrial Innovation Centre. The conference continues until Friday.

-- The Ontario Mennonite Music Camp at Conrad Grebel began yesterday and continues until August 25. Says a press release: the camp provides "a two-week live-in experience for musically motivated young people age 12 to 15 who wish to learn more about the musical heritage of the Christian church. This year's theme is 'Keep Your Boat Afloat: Faith, Promise and Praise.'" The camp provides opportunities for children to participate in choirs, bands, string orchestras, drama skits and other activities.

Spicing things up in the SLC

Brubaker's, the main dining area in the Student Life Centre, is introducing its international table starting today. The table will feature a different international menu each week and will draw its selections from local restaurants, says Michele Grondin of food services.

Vijay's Restaurant of Kitchener is offering authentic Indian dishes this week. Lunches cost $5.25 and are served daily from 10:30 a.m.

Says Grondin: "We look forward to working with restaurants in the region to offer our customers a more varied selection of menu items, and new tastes to tempt the palate.
