You can call it the SLC
The Campus Centre officially became the Student Life Centre when UW's
board of governors gave its approval to the name change a few weeks
ago. And now "CC" as the building abbreviation has officially given
way to "SLC". Shirley Fenton, "manager of space information and planning"
in the office of institutional analysis and planning, says the change
was effective August 1, after she'd sent a memo round campus to make
sure the introduction of "SLC" wouldn't cause any problems.
Open meeting about computing
The University Computing Committee holds another open meeting today
to get input into its
review
of the University Computing Directions Statement. Today's meeting
is specifically intended for staff members, and starts at 1 p.m. in
Davis Centre room 1302.
A break for the Computer Store
The UW Computer Store in the Math and Computer building will be closed
this Friday (August 4) and next Tuesday (August 8). Says manager
Jim Dodd: "In the past, we always closed for two weeks. This year we're
just closing for two days." (Three, if you count Civic Holiday on
Monday.) Things are never really slow in the store, and among other
sources of excitement this month, staff are accepting orders for
Windows 95, the new Microsoft operating system, which is to be shipped
August 24.
Recorder and piano tonight
The Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Society tonight presents Matthew
Jones on recorder and Christine Vanderkooy on piano, in an 8 p.m.
concert at 57 Young Street West. On the program are Handel's Sonata III
for alto and continuo, Rimsky-Korsakoff's "The Bumblebee", and other
works ranging from sixteenth century to contemporary. Information:
886-1673.
