HOW COLD IS IT? Yesterday's Bulletin suggested that a reliable answer
might come from the thermometer in the lobby of the Environmental Studies
building. Don't bother making the trek over there: it's out of order, we
have learned. "Maybe the brass monkey on the roof quit his job," our informant
suggests. Close, Ian McKenzie of geography confirms: the rooftop sensor has
stopped working. However, he points out that you can get a temperature report,
and weather forecast, from Environment Canada at 658-5442.

Larry Bricker of the co-op department has another note on the weather:
"My walk from Lot H to Needles Hall takes me through the foyer of the
Humanities Theatre on cold days like today. I was pleased to note today
that a literature rack there is well stocked with brochures outlining
campus walking tours! Brrr...."

GRADE REPORTS: Fall term grade reports for students in AHS, arts, science
and environmental studies arrived at various hours yesterday and can be
picked up on the second floor of Needles Hall. Those for engineering
students are due today: upper-year students can get them from departmental
offices starting this morning, and first-year students can get theirs at
Carl Pollock Hall room 1320 starting this afternoon. Math students will
have to wait until next Wednesday, January 26. Students at Renison and
St. Jerome's Colleges get their grade reports at their colleges; part-time
students, and students now on co-op work terms, will be receiving theirs
in the mail.

HAPPENING TODAY: At noon hour, in Toronto, an alumni luncheon, with
Senator Trevor Eyton, former chair of UW's board of governors, as the guest
speaker. James Downey, the university's president, will be there (at the
King Edward Hotel) to introduce him.

From 5 to 7, a wine and cheese reception in the Optometry building to
honour Esther Kipp on her retirement. She's been working at UW since
1972 -- for much of that time in the dean of arts office, and latterly as
administrative assistant in the optometry clinic -- and officially retires
February 1.

At 8 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre, "The Affections of May", a play brought
in by the Waterloo Showtime series, described as "a light-hearted
exploration of life after marriage". Tickets are $18 and $16.

YOUR ADDRESS: Have you used UWdir, the electronic directory of people at
this university, lately? It now includes undergraduate student listings
as well as staff and faculty, with grad students expected to be added
next month. UWdir also provides Waterloo's directory of electronic mail
addresses. You can issue the "uwdir" command directly on many computing
systems, or you'll find UWdir as one of the main menu items on UWinfo.

UWdir lists such information as name, department, office, and phone extension
based on official files (payroll, personnel and telephone services in the
case of people who work here; the registrar's office in the case of
undergraduate students).

As for e-mail addresses, only staff and faculty are so far listed. (Listings
for students are coming when a mechanism for doing them is worked out.)
Says the official documentation: "For faculty, staff, and others, the value
comes from information reported to DCS by the individual or by the unit with
which the individual is affiliated, by electronic mail
	To: uwdir-registrar@uwdir.uwaterloo.ca
or by memo in an inter-office envelope addressed to
        UWdir Registrar, Computing Services, MC."

In other words, if you're a staff or faculty member, you should check UWdir,
and if necessary send in word to have your e-mail address corrected or
added to the listings.

EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION: A temporary link to the Northridge (Los Angeles)
Earthquake Information and Location Center Gopher has been added to UWinfo.
Look under the "Events, News, Weather" heading on the main menu.
