GREEN AWARD: Innovative systems that save heat, energy and water
in UW buildings have been cited as winners in the Environmental
Achievement Awards presented by the Chamber of Commerce of
Kitchener and Waterloo.

UW received the "Company of the Year" award Tuesday for its
"closed-loop recirculation" and "mass thermal storage" systems in
which water is reused for cooling and heating, and large amounts
of energy are saved.

Patti Cook, UW's waste management coordinator, said both systems
were designed at the university and provide big energy savings in
electricity, heating and cooling as well as reduced water
consumption.

David Churchill, director of technical services in plant
operations, said the recirculation system provides all the
chilled-water requirements of the campus in the winter for such
things as cooling equipment while creating enough heat to warm
the Chemistry 2 building. The computerized mass thermal storage
system uses the mass of the building rather than "brute-force"
air-conditioning to cool buildings. It also flushes stale air and
vapors out of the buildings for a better working environment.

The chamber said the award is given in "recognition of the
company which has clearly demonstrated an outstanding commitment
to sustainable development, environmental protection and
rehabilitation through policy, practices and actions both in its
internal operations and interactions with the community at
large."

UW has been recognized with an award in each of the three years
of the chamber's program. Last year the university was given the
"Special Recognition in General Ecology" award and in 1992 won
the "Innovation" award. Both recognize efforts under the WatGreen
-- greening of the campus -- initiative.

Launched in 1990, WatGreen is making the campus a more
environmentally friendly place by drawing on the research efforts
of faculty and students in co-operation with staff at the
university. The chief goal is to transform UW into a showcase of
sustainability, an ecosystem in harmony with the environment.
Benefits include reductions in operating costs.

CARRYING ON: UW's president, James Downey, announced Wednesday
that three current faculty deans have been re-appointed for a
further three years, beginning next year. They are:

Prof. David Burns, Faculty of Engineering, commencing July
1, 1995;
Prof. Jack Kalbfleisch, Faculty of Mathematics, commencing
July 1, 1995;
Prof. John Thompson, Faculty of Sciences, commencing July 1,
1995.

In a memo, circulated to all faculty members as well as campus
officials, Downey said the decanal appointments were approved by
UW's board of governors June 7. Each appointment was recommended
by a nominating committee and approved previously by UW's senate.

"On behalf of all members of the university community I wish to
thank Professors Burns, Kalbfleisch and Thompson for the
leadership they are providing to their faculties and to the
university," Downey said.

ENVIRONMENT WEEK: Celebrations continue with a pot-luck lunch and
"bike tattooing" in the Environmental Studies 1 Building's
Courtyard. Information booths on the environment will be set up.
The entire event is hosted by the public issues board of the UW
Federation of Students.

Also, there will be ticket giveaways for a benefit concert to be
held at 8 p.m. in the Bombshelter Pub in the Campus Centre.

ATHLETICS RETIREES: Three retiring sports administrators at UW's
athletics department will be honored at a pre-retirement social
to be held today, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., in South Campus Hall,
Festival Room.

Effective Sept. 1, Wally Delahey, director of athletics, Pat
Davis, assistant director of finance and inter-university
services, and Don McCrae, men's inter-university coordinator,
will all retire. During their lengthy careers, they have served
as coaches of successful varsity teams.

Delahey's replacement as director will be Judy McCrae, another
veteran member of the department and a former coach.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: All the best to Prof. Raymond Legge, chemical
engineering, who celebrates his birthday .
