NEW POST FOR DEAN: Arthur Carty, UW's dean of research since 1989, has
been named president of the National Research Council of Canada, and will
leave Waterloo for Ottawa at the end of July.

Carty has been in UW's chemistry department since 1967. He said he's
hoping to arrange a leave of absence from the university for his five-year
term as the head of NRC, the government's in-house agency for scientific
research. And he's definitely hoping to continue his own research during
the NRC appointment -- in an NRC lab and perhaps also at Waterloo.

The appointment is being seen as significant, in that NRC's staff of 3,000
people, mostly researchers, will be headed by an active scientist. The
current president has led NRC through substantial budget cuts, and morale
in the agency is described as low. Carty said yesterday that NRC "still
has some excellent researchers and some excellent laboratories" and can
play an important role in technological and economic development for Canada.

FELLOW OF THE RSC: Despite what it says in yesterday's Gazette, UW does
have a new Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada this year. The RSC just
hadn't sent an announcement. Joining the select group of Fellows is Jack
Kalbfleisch, professor of statistics and UW's dean of mathematics.

INTERNET WORKSHOP: UW's library holds a workshop today (4:30 p.m.)
titled "Gateway to the Internet", introducing resources that range from
Waterloo's own library catalogue to electronic journals and subject-specific
databases across North America and beyond. The workshop starts at the
information desk in the Davis Centre library.

What is Internet, the publicity for today's workshop asks? "The Internet is
a global network of computer networks that allows you to interact with
individuals, groups of people, or computer systems around the world. UWinfo
provides a link, via the Internet, to computer systems around the world."

ALSO TODAY: The Jewish Students Association holds its first event of
the spring term today: a barbecue at 6:30 at the Laurel Lake barbecue pit.

The Gay and Lesbian Liberation group has a booth in the Campus Centre
today (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) with a petition for passers-by to sign, urging
the Ontario legislature to pass the current bill that would give same-sex
couples many of the same rights as heterosexual married couples.

A display of photos and articles about the Tienanmen Square bloodshed in
Peking, five years ago this week, can be seen on the third floor of Math
and Computer from 11 to 2:30 today; it's sponsored by five campus and
community Chinese groups. The same display will be in the ICR lounge in
the Davis Centre tomorrow from 10 to 3.

TO SAY GOODBYE: A "pre-retirement social" will be held a week from today
-- Thursday, June 9 -- to honour three members of the athletics department
who are about to retire. They are Wally Delahey, Pat Davis, and Don
McCrae. The event runs from 4 to 6 that day in the Festival Room of South
Campus Hall. RSVP's (and gift contributions) can be sent to Jane Farley
in the student affairs office, Needles Hall.
