Daily Bulletin, Tuesday, July 19, 1994 BANK PARTNERSHIP: UW and the Bank of Montreal have announced a reception in Toronto next Monday "to launch the Bank of Montreal/University of Waterloo Learning Technologies Partnership". Says a news release: "This strategic alliance between the bank and university will develop a model curriculum for training professionals in software technology. The partnership is funded jointly by Bank of Montreal, through a gift to the university, and the Software Human Resource Council. Benefits of the partnership include the opportunity for UW to develop a centre of excellence in technology-supported distance learning, building upon its current strengths. Bank of Montreal will have access to training for its software professionals as well as participating in the research and development of learning technologies." The event will be held on the 68th floor of the Bank of Montreal's landmark offices in downtown Toronto, First Canadian Place. LEARNING TECHNOLOGY: An information session starts at 10:30 today (Math and Computer room 4040) about research in technology-based learning that's currently being done at UW. Says John Robinson of the Teaching Resource office: "In the Federal Government's Networks of Centres of Excellence) Phase II program, there are opportunities for active researchers to form new networks in five targetted theme areas. One of these theme areas is technology-based learning. A learning technologies steering group here at the University of Waterloo has been considering leadership or participation in an NCE proposal in technology-based learning. The group has been active for several months, and would now like to present a status report to other UW learning technologies researchers." RETIREMENT RECEPTION: Wes Graham and John Vellinga of the computer science department are about to retire, and will be honoured with a reception (6:30) and dinner (7:00) tonight in South Campus Hall. Look for a big turnout of Waterloo old-timers, as both Graham and Vellinga have been here through the years and had a major influence on computing and academics at UW. Last-minute information about the event should be available from Brenda McBay in the CS department. PART-TIME STUDIES: People interested in beginning part-time study at UW are invited to an "informal evening session" at the part-time studies office, 156 Columbia Street, this evening from 7 to 8:30. Staff will describe the courses and programs available. "Academic advisors and other resource people can discuss your educational background and goals on a one-to-one basis. It's also a convenient way for returning students to pre-register for the new term." Information: ext. 4002.
