Daily Bulletin, Monday, July 18, 1994 COLLEGE PRINCIPAL: Helga Kutz-Harder was introduced Friday as the next principal of St. Paul's United College. She'll take office November 1. Until then, St. Paul's dean Russel Legge is acting principal. Currently executive secretary for the United Church's Toronto Conference, Kutz-Harder holds a PhD in English (specializing in Shakespearean studies) and has taught both in Canada and abroad, including the University of Windsor, the University of North Carolina and the International Christian University in Tokyo. COMING IN SEPTEMBER: UW has so far heard from 3,409 people who plan to be first-year students in September. That amounts to 97.3 per cent of the September 1 target, says Ken Lavigne, the associate registrar (admissions). Most faculties are at about the 97 per cent level, and arts is actually beyond the target, with a target of 854 first-year students on September 1 and 895 people who have so far confirmed that they're coming. The one faculty to be much short of the target is science: 467 confirmations so far, with a target of 550. Not to worry, says science dean John Thompson. "We adopted a pretty conservative approach," he says, because the faculty is overcrowded now and he'd rather see enrolment fall short than go over. "We're very comfortable," the dean maintains. There are some variations among programs. In science, the shortfall is concentrated in chemistry and physics. Lavigne notes that September 1 targets are different from the targets for November 1, the date when enrolments are officially counted. Between September and November, enrolment traditionally goes up in arts, math and science, but down in engineering. VINTAGE COMET: UW's observatory will be open again this week to let interested people check out the planet Jupiter and what's happening as fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 smash into it. The celestial fireworks started Saturday night. The observatory, atop the Physics building, will be open from 9:30 to 10:30, tonight through Friday. WATER'S OFF: The water will be turned off in parts of South Campus Hall tomorrow morning, from 8 a.m. to noon, in connection with the renovations that are continuing there.
