IN MOURNING: Edward Schmidt, a long-time veteran of the UW police force,
died on Wednesday evening, suffering a heart attack just after getting
home from his day's work. His was a familiar face on campus, as he was
assigned to the University Avenue kiosk for most of the past three years.
The flags that he raised each morning fly at half-staff today in his memory.
The funeral service will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at the Edward R. Good
Funeral Home on King Street South; visitation is from 2:30 p.m.

UTILITY SHUTDOWN: Heating, ventilation and air conditioning will be
shut down tomorrow from 6 a.m. to noon in many rooms on the first and
second floor of the Math and Computer building. Plant operations is doing
preventive maintenance.

BUSY WEEKEND: Just a few of the things that are happening today and
Saturday:

The staff association trip to the SkyDome to see the Blue Jays
play Kansas City; bus leaves at 5:15 tonight.

"Christmas in July" tonight at the Bombshelter pub in the Campus
Centre -- and they couldn't have picked a better date for it, with
the outside air like a steambath.

Student-vs.-faculty baseball in the physics department, tomorrow at
2 p.m. at Columbia Field, with a barbecue to follow.

A programming contest tomorrow (10 a.m., Math and Computer 3022),
sponsored by the Computer Science Club. Winners from this event
might go on to the regional, even international, competition sponsored
by the Association for Computing Machinery, a competition that
brought glory to UW's team this past year.

JUST RUMOURS: "Rumour mill has it," a note told me this morning, "that
there has been a string of assaults against women (of a sexual nature)
in the last few weeks. Is there any basis to this rumour?" No, says
Sergeant Wayne Shortt of the UW police. "There certainly has not been
anything reported to us." He said he also isn't aware of anything of the
sort on or near campus that the Waterloo Regional Police might be
handling. He wonders: how do these rumours start?

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS today to Kirti Shah of the department of statistics and
actuarial science.
