ON THE 50TH anniversary of the liberation of Paris . . . on Matt Erickson's
birthday (he being UW's coordinator of ethical behaviour and human rights)
. . . on the opening day of the Buskers Festival on downtown Waterloo . . .
here's what's happening at Waterloo.

A WORKSHOP on learning technology in science and mathematics is taking
place this afternoon. The speaker: David Finnemore, of the University of
Cape Town, who is visiting Peter Chieh of UW's chemistry department.
He'll speak about PRISM, "Programmed Interaction in Science and
Mathematics", at 3:30 in Math and Computer room 2009.

RECYCLING CARTS, the big 68-gallon ones, will be taken off campus for a
cleaning next Tuesday, says Patti Cook, the waste management coordinator.
"The pickup will begin at 7 a.m., so this means that carts should be
taken out to the pickup locations (loading dock areas) on Monday, August
29." That's a change, since the usual pickup day is Wednesday.

LIBRARY CLOSES: The University Map and Design Library will be closed
from this Saturday, August 27, through Monday, September 5.

STORE'S OPEN: The Used Book Store, run by the Federation of Students,
doesn't succumb to the August doldrums or even to construction chaos.
In its temporary home in a portable building outside the Campus Centre,
the store is open all this month -- 9 to 5 on weekdays, noon to 4 p.m.
on Saturdays. More than 10,000 used textbooks are in stock, priced
at 80 per cent or less of the cost of new books.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED: The local Volunteer Action Centre lists the following
opportunities this week:

Literacy Promotions Assistant: A unique fundraiser, "Feed the Need
to Read", needs people to stand at various locations handing out
bookmarks and asking for change. This one-time short-term activity
(September 10 from 10 to 2 or from 2 to 6 p.m.) will help stamp
     out illiteracy. Listing 048-976

Big Sisters: By offering friendship three hours a week to a young
girl or boy with social, emotional or family problems, you can be
the positive influence that helps someone grow in self-confidence.
The agency provides training on relevant issuers, plus ongoing
workshops. Eligible are women over the age of 20, who can commit
for at least one year. There is a long waiting list of youngsters
     seeking Big Sisters. Listing 007-29
