STUDENT WINS AWARD: Echelle Kerr, a second-year University of
St. Jerome's College student, has been awarded one of six Queen
Elizabeth Silver Jubilee scholarships in Canada.

The $5,000 award will provide Kerr, a student in the French
teaching specialization of UW's applied studies co-op program,
with one year of study at a francophone university.

She will spend next year at the University of Quebec in
Chicoutimi. "The thought of being immersed in this completely
French milieu is exciting," she says.

The award is provided by the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee
Endowment Fund for Study in a Second Official Language. It seeks
to encourage young Canadians wishing to improve their proficiency
to pursue full-time studies at a Canadian university functioning
in that language.

GREAT TIME: Members of the Computer Science Club enjoyed
themselves at the Stratford Festival a week ago when taking in
"Alice Through the Looking-Glass."

It was just the tonic the 16 CSC members needed as they got ready
for exams after a spring term of classes and study. They took in
the matinee performance of the play last Friday, just days before
exams began on Tuesday.

Rob Leitman was one of them, and he reports that "all had a great
time." (On Saturday, a group students from the Mathematics
Society watched "Othello" at Stratford.)

"The costumes and set design were particularly good," Leitman
says about the play. "One interesting note in the program is
that Corinne Richards, the assistant stage manager, is a UW
alumnus (she got a BA here)."

UTILITY SHUTDOWN: The taps will be turned off at the Health
Services building tomorrow morning.

Dave Churchill, director of technical services at plant
operations, said the reason for the utility shutdown is to
provide facilities for "soft water crossover" in time for a
future water shutdown at the Campus Centre, which is undergoing a
major construction. In other words, Health Services will gain
its own water supply during the construction period.

Hot, cold and soft water will be turned off during Saturday's
shutdown at Health Services, lasting from 8 a.m. to noon.
