GEOGRAPHERS HONORED:  Two UW geographers have recently received
achievement awards for their scholarly endeavors.

Prof. Bruce Mitchell has won the Canadian Association of
Geographers' 1994 Award for Scholarly Distinction.  The award is
given to recognize outstanding research in the field of
geography.

Also, Prof. Gordon Nelson has received this year's Regional
Municipality of Waterloo 1994 Regional Environmental Award.  In
particular, Nelson's many efforts on behalf of heritage resources
of the Grand River were acknowledged.

POSITIONS AVAILABLE:  Here's the latest jobs listing from UW's

Library Assistant. Library USG 6.  Undergraduate degree,
(humanities or social sciences preferred); at least two years of
experience working in an academic library; experience with on-
line cataloguing, acquisitions or circulation system;
demonstrated ability to communicate effectively as well as strong
interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability in problem solving.
Experience with GEAC an asset; willingness to work some evenings
and weekends.

Alumni Development Supervisor. Alumni Affairs. USG 6.  University
degree required.  Proven fundraising experience in a
telemarketing environment.  Superior leadership and supervisory
skills, with an emphasis on the ability to motivate staff.
Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal and
organizational skills.  Must have the ability to function
independently in a busy and diverse environment.  Hours are
Monday and Tuesday 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and regular hours the
remainder of the week.  Willingness to work overtime as required.
Full-time one-year contractual appointment with the possibility
of renewal, contingent on funding.

Housekeeper. Housing Department.  Several years experience
essential.  Responsible for the general cleanliness of the
residence complex.  Must have good oral and written communication
skills and be able to deal effectively with student residents.
Capable of working independently.

Shift Sergeant. Security. USG 7.  Minimum of five years police
experience within a university environment.  Excellent oral and
written communication and interpersonal skills essential.  Good
physical condition.  Willing to work 12-hour shifts.  Proven
leadership skills and administrative ability.  Occasional
requirement to work overtime.  The successful completion of the
Advance Training Course or a Senior Police Management course
would be an asset.  Qualified candidates within the department.

Fixed Asset Inventory Clerk. Financial Services. USG 3.  Several
years office experience in a computerized financial environment.
Familiarity with accounting systems, structures and procedures
required.  Knowledge of Fixed Asset Inventory System would be
preferred.  Excellent interpersonal organizational and
communication skills.

Program Secretary. Canadian Political Science Association
(Political Science). USG 4.  Several years secretarial
experience.  Excellent organizational, interpersonal and
communication (oral and written) skills required.  Must be able
to work with minimum supervision.  Proficient with WordPerfect
and database management.  Some secondary school education an
asset.  This is a part-time position 14 hours per week.
Contingent on funding for three years.

Alumni Officer. Alumni Affairs. USG 7.  University degree
required.  Excellent written and oral communication skills as
well as proven leadership and organizational abilities are
essential.  Publication experience and demonstrated ability to
work with volunteers required.  Excellent interpersonal skills.
Must have own transportation and a willingness to work overtime
as required.  Editorial experience preferred.

Secretary. Chemistry. USG 3.  High school graduate (chemistry
background preferred) or equivalent education and experience.  A
solid working knowledge of various word processing systems
(WordPerfect 5.1, Microsoft Word 5.0).  Excellent telephone
skills required.  Must have excellent interpersonal,
organizational and communication skills, both written and oral.
Previous secretarial experience in a similar academic environment
an asset.  Strong background in technical typing and chemical
terminology, equations and graphics preferred.

Research Technician. Kinesiology. USG 6.  Degree in Kinesiology
or related life science required.  Wet lab experience preferred.
Familiarity with lab equipment including spectrophotometry and
HPLC an asset.  Knowledge of statistics and related computing
packages, i.e. SPSS.  Excellent interpersonal, organizational and
communication (oral and written) required.  This position is for
part-time hours (18/wk) January 1 - April 30 and full-time hours
(37.5/wk) for the remaining May - December.  The position is
contingent on funding for one year.

Equipment Room Attendant. Athletics. USG 2.  High school graduate
or equivalent education and experience.  Good communication
skills required to deal effectively with faculty, staff and
students.  Service oriented with an interest in sports.  Must be
capable of performing some heavy lifting.  Knowledge of
commercial laundry, operation of the Olympia (ice-clearing
machine) and equipment storage requirements required.  Ability to
work independently.  Must be willing to work rotating shifts plus
occasional Saturdays.  This position is a one-year contract
subject to renewal.
