Wednesday, March 2, 1994 REVIEW OF ADMINISTRATION: The four-person committee reviewing UW's "central administration" has issued a memo inviting suggestions and comments. Chaired by J. F. O'Sullivan of the University of New Brunswick, the committee also includes two faculty members and one staff member from UW. Here's the text of its announcement: The President's Advisory Committee on Central Administrative Structure has been established to review and consider what organizational changes, if any, would enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of these offices in meeting the future needs of the University of Waterloo. The Central Administrative Structure includes the offices of the President, the Vice-President, Academic & Provost, the Vice- President, University Relations, the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Dean of Research, the University Secretary, the Treasurer, and the Associate Provosts for General Services, Computing and Information Systems, Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. As part of its work, the Committee will be meeting with the holders of these offices, and with those who report directly to them, including the Chairs of University Appointments Review Committee, Interdisciplinary Programs and Academic Human Resources. The Committee will consult with the executive committees of the Senate, the Faculty Association, the Staff Association, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 793, the Graduate Student Association, the Federation of Students, the National Alumni Council, the Church College Heads, a number of Board members and former senior administrators. In addition, the Committee would now invite signed, written comments and suggestions from all members of the campus community, particularly with respect to the following questions: -- What purposes should the central administration serve? -- What authority and responsibility should vest in the central administration? -- What relationship should there be between the central administration and the faculties/ academic support departments/ ancillary services/ students/ church colleges? -- What are the strengths and weaknesses of the present central administrative structure? -- What changes to the current structure will be required to meet current and future needs? Submissions can be forwarded to the Committee through Lois Claxton, University Secretary, NH 3060, not later than March 31. Any information or comments directed in confidence to the Committee will be so treated by the Committee. WARRIORS ARE OUT: The basketball Warriors ended their season last night in a thriller of a game. Alex Urosevic had 21 points, and the Warriors pulled within one point of the Guelph Gryphons with 1:30 left to play, but they couldn't quite do it. Final score: Guelph 79, Waterloo 71. CO-OP PLACEMENTS: About half of the 3,000 co-op students looking for jobs in the spring term found them in the initial placement period, says Dick Pullin of the co-op department. Now the department switches to "continuous placement" mode, with a series of postings and interviews intended to get the remaining 1,500 students matched with jobs one by one. Jobs are still coming in every day, Pullin says. And a footnote: a few students who were unplaced for the winter (January-April) term are even now finding jobs for what's left of the term. SESSIONS FOR GRADS: The Graduate Student Association has announced "feedback sessions", designed "for all graduate students to communicate with the GSA and express concerns as well as see what the GSA is doing with respect to these concerns". Among the issues: ancillary fees, dental insurance, student-supervisor relationships, intellectual property.
