FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENT: An MP and an MPP are coming to campus this morning
to announce funding for UW under the "Canada/Ontario Infrastructure Works
Program". UW had applied for money to build an extension to Matthews
Hall and an extension to the Optometry building, as well as for safety
improvements to the Student Village residences. Mike Farnan, associate
minister of education and training (and the New Democratic MPP for
Cambridge) will be the Ontario representative; Andrew Telegdi, Liberal MP
for Waterloo, will be here for the federal government. Media have been
invited to the announcement at 11 a.m. in Davis Centre room 1301.

ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGE: The president has set a firm date for the release
of the "O'Sullivan report" on UW's senior administrative structure, along
with his response and announcements of any changes he's making immediately.
The long-awaited report will be made public at the September meeting of
UW's senate, this coming Monday evening.

HAPPENING TODAY: Teaching assistants from all faculties will meet in
Needles Hall room 3001 this afternoon (1 to 4 p.m.) for a TA workshop
jointly sponsored by the dean of graduate studies and the teaching resource
office (TRACE). Says an announcement: "A small group problem-solving
exercise will explore problems and solutions to common situations faced
by many TAs, followed by an experienced TA panel reflecting on their
personal teaching assistant experiences. TA resource staff from across
campus will also attend the workshop, and we will be joined by Dr. Terry
Downey, Political Science, discussing ways teaching professionalism can
be maintained when dealing with students, faculty or staff." Last-minute
information: TRACE, ext. 3132.

Even before that, grad students will be getting together. Says Ryan
English of the Graduate Student Association: " All new science grad
students and new psychology grads are scheduled to use their BBQ coupon
today (check with your departmental grad secretary if you didn't get one)
between 11:30 and 13:00. We'll also be honouring coupons from any new grad
who missed an opportunity to come out earlier in the week. And the Women's
Issues Committee is presenting an outdoor music festival beside the Grad
House from 2 p.m. until late into the evening (please bring a donation for
the food bank)."

The department of computing services holds its weekly in-house seminar
this morning. Guest for today: Angelo Graham of UW's safety office, talking
about office ergonomics.

THE WEEKEND: Gorgeous, according to the forecasts, for the physics
department's "almost traditional" barbecue outing on Saturday.

There are bands at Federation Hall both tonight (The Watchmen with hHead)
and Saturday night (54:40, in an "all ages show"). Tickets, if any are
still available, and information: 888-4042.

The annual Terry Fox Run, raising money for cancer research in memory of
the heart-wrenching 1980 Marathon of Hope, takes place Sunday afternoon.
The Kitchener-Waterloo run starts from Federation Hall at 1 p.m., with
registration at 12:30. The route goes along the ring road, University
Avenue, Erb Street, Fischer-Hallman Road, Keats Way, Westmount Road
and Columbia Street, and back to Fed Hall again. Information: 747-5001.
Gary Buckley in the UW registrar's office (phone ext. 3507) is accepting
donations.
