SOCIAL CONTRACT: The question now is whether the Toronto talks will
collapse completely before the deadline (this Friday) set by the Ontario
government for a three-way agreement on cutting the public payroll. The
Canadian Union of Public Employees, which includes some 300 UW staff
members among the public servants it represents, is said to be close to
pulling out of the talks.

Other employee groups are still involved, as well as employer representatives.
Among those in Toronto full-time this week is Brenda Law of UW's office
of operations analysis, who's there for the Confederation of Ontario
University Staff Associations.

CLOSED MEETING: UW's senate will meet in confidential session at 5:30
today to hear a report from the Nominating Committee for Vice-President
(Academic) and Provost. If the senate approves, and the board of governors
does likewise in a meeting set for tomorrow afternoon, we could know on
Wednesday who will succeed Alan George as vice-president as of July 1.

PICNIC TOMORROW: Linda Kieswetter of the development office is crossing
her fingers and toes, hoping for the rain to dry up, so everything will be
balmy for tomorrow's campus-wide picnic. The event, celebrating progress in
the Community Campaign (faculty, staff and retiree givings to UW), is
scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Davis Centre quadrangle, with
hot dogs and cake available in return for a loonie donation.

READING TODAY: Michele Slung (editor of Slow Hand: Women Writing Erotica)
will read from her work at 3:30 today in room 315 of St. Jerome's College.
