NO GAZETTE:  There is no issue of the Gazette today.  Regular publication
resumes next Wednesday, June 2.

CONVOCATION:  UW's president, James Downey, will be formally installed in
office as the first order of business at this afternoon's convocation
ceremony (Physical Activities Complex, 2 p.m.). Among the guests will be
the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, Hal Jackman.  Downey will give the
convocation address.  Being presented today are 535 degrees in environmental
studies, applied health sciences, and independent studies.

In South Campus Hall this evening, a dinner for invited guests will celebrate
Downey's installation.  To make room for dinner guests, parking lot H will
be closed to entering cars from 3 p.m.  Lot C, across University Avenue, will
be open and free.

Tomorrow's convocation ceremony (also in the PAC at 2 p.m.) will see 898 
degrees awarded from the faculty of arts.  Subsequent convocations:  Friday
at 2 (science), Saturday at 10 (mathematics), Saturday at 2 (engineering).

SOCIAL CONTRACT:  There's been no progress in the talks at "sectoral 
tables" in Toronto, participants report, as government, public-sector
employers, and employee groups move closer to the government's June 4 
deadline for a general agreement on cutting salaries and costs.

PHYSICS RECEPTION:  The department of physics has announced a reception
June 1 (next Tuesday) to honour several people: Frank Boswell and Neil
Isenor on their retirement, Phil Eastman for "25 years of SINning", and
Ron Aziz on becoming a professor emeritus.  The event runs from 4 to 6
in the Flamingo Room, South Campus Hall.  Tickets are $5 from Judy 
Weerheim, ext. 2216.
