Friday, May 21, 1993 HOLIDAY COMING: Monday, May 24, is Victoria Day and a holiday. UW offices and most services (including all the libraries) will be closed, and classes will not be held. There will be no fireworks on campus on Monday. In recent years, hundreds of people have gone to Columbia Lake expecting Victoria Day fireworks, and been disappointed. The campus does have fireworks on July 1, but not in May. DRIVE SAFELY: Today begins National Road Safety Week, spnosored by the Canada Safety Council and concentrating on safety for children under 10. Almost 200 children die in motor vehicle accidents in Canada each year; most of those deaths could be prevented, and injuries could be reduced, if appropriate seatbelts and other restraint devices were used, the safety council says. SOCIAL CONTRACT: Negotiations continue in Toronto. The "sectoral table" dealing with colleges and universities actually met yesterday, with representatives of government, employee groups, and management, although the sniping continues; at last report the Council of Ontario Universities was miffed about some of this week's rescheduling. Linda Norton, Anne Harris, Brenda Law and Cameron McDonald of UW's staff association are taking a tag-team approach to representing university staff at the negotiations. Like any employee group of more than 1,000 people, the UW staff association would be entitled to direct representation at the talks, but instead has been working through the Confederation of Ontario University Staff Associations. UW faculty are represented through the Ontario Confederation of Univerfsity Faculty Associations. GEOGRAPHER'S AWARD: Gordon Nelson of UW's geography department is the 1993 winner of the Massey Medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, considered the highest honour for geographers in Canada.
