ONTARIO BUDGET: There was little in yesterday's provincial budget that
affects universities directly, except that the payroll department will
have the job of increasing the amount of income tax deducted from everyone's
pay. Parking fees become subject to provincial tax (those who have a
monthly parking fee deducted from their pay are already paying GST on it).

The budget imposed sales tax also on some insurance premiums. UW treasurer
Dorothy Battae said this morning she isn't sure what forms of insurance are
affected, but is working on finding out. In particular, both the university
and individual staff and faculty members could find themselves paying sales
tax on the premiums for Extended Health Care and group life insurance, if
they aren't exempt. The UW budget could also be hit for sales tax on the
premiums on UW's property insurance.

UW LOSES INSTITUTE: The Fields Institute for mathematical research, which
has had its temporary home at Waterloo, is going to the University of
Toronto. UW officials are disappointed at the decision by the Institute's
board to move to U of T; they thought Waterloo had made a convincing case
for establishing the permanent headquarters here. The Fields Institute is
currently housed in University Park 3 on Phillip Street.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: The memorial service for Sally Weaver, UW anthropology
professor who died last week, will be held today at 3 p.m. in room 105 of
the Arts Lecture Hall.

HONOURING PROVOST: Alan George, vice-president (academic) and provost, is the
guest of honour at a reception this evening as he nears the end of his term.
(The nominating committee choosing his successor is holding a heavy-duty
meeting today.) The reception in honour of George runs from 4:30 to 6:30
in Federation Hall.
