MATHEMATICIANS are atwitter this morning at the report that Fermat's Last
Theorem has been proven. It's one of the classic problems in pure math,
tossed off by a genius who died without writing down his proof, and
(according to the Internet yesterday and the New York Times this morning)
it has finally been proven, by Andrew Wiles of Princeton University.

GOLFERS AWAY: Staff and faculty who aren't in the office today may well
be taking a day off for UW's fourth annual Matthews Golf Classic, being
held at Rockway Golf Course in Kitchener. It's a purely social, morale-
building event, organized by volunteers; the name honours former UW
president Burt Matthews.
