Social Contract talks continue briskly. Today, at 1:30 p.m., university
administration meets with the staff compensation committee. Tomorrow
(Thursday) there's another meeting scheduled with the faculty salary
committee at 8 a.m., and then it's back with staff compensation early
Friday morning. Dr. Jim Kalbfleisch, vice-president academic and provost,
expressed the hope agreements can be reached by the end of this week.
There's a special board of governors meeting scheduled for Monday, July 26,
4:30 p.m. in NH3001. The meeting will deal specifically with the social
contract issue.

The computer pornography issue has become a hot media story again due to
complaints raised by the university women's centre which is calling for a
ban on the sex related newsgroups on the Usenet system. The centre is
citing the discovery of child pornography and abuse of women in items on
the international bulletin board network. University representatives will
be meeting with women's centre representatives in the next day or so to
discuss the situation.

The university has a new head coach for its women's varsity basketball
team. She's Kathy Keats, a former assistant at the University of Victoria
and for the British Columbia Canada Games Team. She's a former all-star for
the UVic national champion team and holds a BSc from UVic in human
performance. She succeeds former UW coach Denise Dignard who headed off to
the University of Ottawa.
