EDMONDS SETTLEMENT: The long Jack Edmonds controversy has been ended,
with an agreement last week between UW and the once-and-future math
professor. Details of the settlement haven't been made public, but
the dean of mathematics, Jack Kalbfleisch, has confirmed that Edmonds
will return to the department of combinatorics and optimization to do
research. Edmonds left the faculty in August 1991. University officials
said he had resigned; Edmonds said that what looked like letters
of resignation weren't intended to be anything of the sort, and
sued to get his job back. Last week's agreement ends the litigation
and settles all the grievances involved in the case, Kalbfleisch said.
A statement from the two parties is expected to outline the agreement
they've reached.

FACULTY TALKS: Negotiations between UW and the faculty association aimed
at a Social Contract "local agreement" aren't dead. Ian Macdonald, head
of the association's salary negotiating team, said Friday afternoon that
his group had presented a new offer to UW management, and the faculty
salary committee will meet Thursday to hear the management response.
August 10 is the deadline for a negotiated settlement; otherwise UW's
board of governors and president are required to impose a "failsafe"
salary settlement.

MINISTER COMING: Federal science minister Rob Nicholson has announced
a visit to campus for tomorrow afternoon. He's expected to make a
statement about the government's support for Canarie, the Canadian
Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry and Education -- the
national "electronic highway" linking computers.
