THIRTY DAYS, as always, hath September,
and this is the one on which we remember
the earth sciences department's guru, or shogun,
the great geologist William Logan.
They'll celebrate for Sir William's sake
on the sunny shores of Columbia Lake
with the Stone Man Triathlon and barbecue,
and then, when Logan Day is through,
staff and faculty and students as well
are set to withdraw to the Huether Hotel.

HEALTHY EATING: Yesterday's Gazette drew attention to the new "Healthy
Eating for Healthy You" program being offered by health and safety.
Thanks to my flying fingers and lack of proofreading, we said the first
noon-hour program was "Wednesday, October 26". In fact, it's happening
next Wednesday, October 6 -- from 12:30 to 1:30. Information: ext. 2424.

BICYCLE AUCTION: Unclaimed bicycles held by the UW police will be
up for auction this Saturday (October 2) starting at 2 p.m. in the great
hall of the Campus Centre. Purchases are open only to UW students, staff
and faculty (with identification); cash only; one bike per customer;
bicycles are sold as-is.

SEX IS FUNNY: At least Joann Loulan thinks so. Described as "one of
North America's best known, and outrageous, sexuality therapists", she
will be speaking in the Theatre of the Arts tomorrow (Friday) night at
8. "Loulan is well-known for her hilarious and unpredictable performances,"
a blurb says, adding, "Don't sit in the front row!" Tickets are $15
general admission, $13 students, from the Humanities box office.

Like a fair number of events lately, the Loulan talk and the bike auction
weren't reported in time to be announced in the Gazette. Event organizers
are urged, once again, to notify the information office well ahead of
time. We're in Needles Hall 3041.

FALL CONVOCATION: UW's "Sixty-Seventh Convocation for the Conferment
of Degrees" will be held Saturday, October 23. There are two sessions:
at 10 a.m. for arts and applied health sciences; at 2 p.m. for
engineering, environmental studies, independent studies, science and
mathematics.
