STAFF MEMBER DIES: The chemistry department and the university today
are mourning Janice Byars, a long-time staff member in the chemistry
department, who died Sunday after what was described as "a very
courageous battle with lymphoma". She had been away from work for
the last few months, after working for 28 years in chemistry stores,
where her responsibilities included the equipment for lab work done
by hundreds of first-year students. "She will be fondly remembered
by all of her 'family' here," says a colleague in the department,
Scott Nicoll. A memorial service is to be held at 6:30 tonight at
the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King Street South.

PENSION MEETING: A memo came out yesterday with details of the special
meeting set for next Tuesday by the board of governors pension and benefits
committee. It begins at 8:45 a.m. (September 28) in Needles Hall 3001.
It's described as an "information session" about the temporary reductions
in pension premiums being paid by individual faculty and staff members
and by UW as the employer. "Present and future pensions will not be
affected," the memo stresses. Its full text will be in tomorrow's Gazette.

FACULTY HONOURED: The faculty of mathematics holds a reception tonight
(7:30, University Club) to welcome its new faculty and to honour three
professors who are retiring: Janos Aczel, Bruno Forte, and Peter Ponzo.
