Monday, September 20, 1993 THE UNITED WAY: The annual campaign in support of charities and service organizations begins on campus today, with a goal of raising $183,000 in faculty and staff contributions. A letter from UW president James Downey went out this morning to draw attention to the effort. He speaks of "a personal commitment to the United Way and a firm belief in its value. . . . Giving is a private matter, and I would not presume to tell others their duty. I would, however, encourage all who can to give generously when a United Way volunteer calls." BLOOD IS NEEDED: The local Red Cross, which has been short of blood supplies in recent days, is holding a blood donor clinic in Village 2 today. It will be in operation from 2 to 7:30 p.m. in the North Quad lounges, rooms 102 and 110. As usual, everyone is welcome to give blood, and advised to eat beforehand. TRIVIAL DISPLAY: "Celebrating the Pursuit of Trivia" is the current display at UW's museum and archive of games in Matthews Hall. It marks the tenth anniversary of the invention of Trivial Pursuit, and includes the original prototype board for the game as well as editions from around the world. Admission is free; the museum is open Tuesday 10-12 and 1-4, Wednesday 1-4 and 6-8, Thursday and Sunday 1-4 p.m. WARRIORS WIN: The football Warriors beat the York Yeomen 22-5 on Saturday and left York sharing a little of the burden that had been Waterloo's. With this loss, York has now lost 33 straight games, as many as the Warriors lost in the famous streak that ended two years ago. The soccer, rugby, tennis, cross-country and field hockey seasons are also under way, and weekly sports reports in the Gazette begin this week.
