VISITORS FROM OTTAWA: Dr. Keith Bezanson, president of the International
Development Research Centre, is at UW today along with several of his
IDRC colleagues. They'll meet with researchers from UW and half a dozen
nearby universities to talk about IDRC programs in such areas as health
sciences, environment and natural resources, information sciences, and
social sciences. Pauline O'Neill, manager of international programs in
UW's office of research, is the host.

UNITED WAY GIVINGS: As of last Wednesday, givings to UW's United Way
campaign had reached $127,631, the campaign organizers say. That's not
quite 70 per cent of the $183,000 target. Participation is at 23.5 per
cent of faculty and staff members, with some additional boosts coming from
graduate students and retired staff and faculty. The campaign wrap-up is
set for this Friday, which is also being boosted as "Casual Day" at
employers around Kitchener-Waterloo that support the United Way. A final
note: "No pledge is too small or too late."

FRENCH DEPARTMENT: The UW senate gave its approval last night to a new
name for one of the academic departments in the faculty of arts: "Department
of French studies -- Departement des etudes francaises". (Sorry, the Daily
Bulletin doesn't have accents and cedillas available.) There were a
couple of smart remarks; somebody wanted to know whether the Germanic and
Slavic department would be along with a similar request, and somebody
else wanted to know whether the new name means the secretarial staff in
the department can now deal with callers in either official language.
(As if they couldn't before!) The new name still needs final approval
from the board of governors in February.

COMMENTS RECEIVED: Thanks to the two dozen or so people who sent comments
about the Daily Bulletin, in response to last week's invitation. Nearly
all said they favoured the current brief format. There were a few other
suggestions, which will certainly be considered. A couple of people said
they'd like to see the Bulletin earlier in the morning, which probably
can't be done unless I start doing it before I shower and shave. . . .
