LEAVING UW:  Ross Hecktus, one of the old-time staff in the plant
operations department, is retiring (officially as of January 1).  His
friends and colleagues are invited to a retirement gathering from 2:30
to 4 this afternoon n the plant operations conference room.  Hecktus
came to UW in 1967; his title is New Construction Co-ordinator.

ALSO TODAY, the department of English holds a retirement gathering for
Joe Gold, faculty member since 1970, who is retiring as of January 1.

FENCED IN:  The construction fence around the Student Centre site is
complete, as of yesterday (and blocks off a few customary pedestrian routes
in the Campus Centre and Physical Activities Complex area).  Construction
work on the $6.6 milion project should be starting shortly.

NON-CREDIT COURSES:  The continuing education office has issued its winter
catalogue of courses, divided into four categories:

  Business and professional development -- courses that include Benchmarking
  for Competitive Advantage, Employee Recruitment and Selection, and
  Starting Your Own Business.

  Business and technical writing

  Computer -- including Introduction to the Apple Macintosh, Advanced Excel,
  and Planning a Local Area Network for Your Office.

  Personal development -- including Managing Chronic Pain, Mastering English
  Grammar, and Insider's Guide to Writing Profitable Non-Fiction
